I recommend ignoring the stairways for now and focus on the tasks. This wouldn’t be possible in chapter select either, as the game doesn’t save at all. If you are worried about losing progress, it would be safer to backup your save manually. However, it needs to be done before the screen is completely black as in the current version as the game auto saves as soon as the screen goes black on death. Theoretically you can force close the game if you are about to die and still get the achievement, but I never needed to test it myself.
You must interact with this until it’s in the shape of the Ink Machine.
